About the University

Jadavpur University's history has been intimately entwined with the nation's freedom movement since its foundation by the National Council of Education, Bengal (NCE, Bengal). Post-independence, the Government of West Bengal with the concurrence of the Government of India enacted the necessary legislation to establish Jadavpur University on the 24th of December, 1955. The University has succeeded in establishing itself as one of the topmost universities in the nation, with a vast repertoire of offered courses, coupled with the best faculty members. It is known for its enviable list of faculty members and its commitment towards advanced study and research. All of these are reflected by the NIRF Ranking 2022, where Jadavpur University has succeeded in achieving the topmost position amongst all state universities.

About the Department

The Chemical Engineering Department of Jadavpur University is the oldest department in India, and one of the oldest departments in Chemical Engineering in the World. Established in 1921 as a part of Bengal Technical Institute under the leadership of great visionaries of India, Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy and Dr. Hira Lal Roy, the Department of Chemical Engineering, Jadavpur University, completed its journey of 100 glorious years in 2021. With the help of Acharya P.C. Roy and under the academic leadership of Professor H. L. Roy and Professor Baneswar Das, a course of study was offered for the first time at the Bengal Technical Institute, the predecessor of Jadavpur University. The department has been placed in the 351-400 segment according to subject-wise QS ranking 2022, and takes pride in crafting chemical engineers who have been excelling worldwide and continuing its legacy over the years. The department has excelled in many fields and is home to scientists who belong in the top 2% scientists in the world (issued by Stanford University, USA 2022).

Vision of the Department: To provide education and training in chemical engineering science and practice for developing competence to meet the challenges of cutting-edge research, of emerging high technology in the Chemical Process Industry and of the demands of society at large.

Mission of the Department: To inculcate advanced chemical engineering knowledge to enable students to

translate fundamental discoveries in high technology areas to commercial exploitation,
adapt readily to the challenges presented in a diverse range of industrial sectors that can benefit from process engineering approaches,
utilize experimental and computational skills in pursuing research projects of industrial and societal relevance.
